And while I must confess to Deus Ex being very fun in the "fun with imperfect game physics!" way and some of the emergent gameplay you can get with crates, I don't much miss it in IW. The shotgun/smg are just so much better for close-in work than the mag rail, and the pistol is fantastic for close-in stealth kills (it and the Toxin Blade).Īs for the original DX being about resource management, I know I'm not the only one who had a problem with resource hoarding (at least many people hardcore enough to still post about it have commiserated about the problem). In my standard playthrough I'll make effective use of a pistol (Silencer/Glass Destabilizer until you get the Assassin Pistol, then it's Damage/Range), sniper rifle (usually silencer/ammo scavenger), mag rail (who cares? It can shoot through walls!), and either a shotgun or an SMG depending on my mood.

And rocket launchers really were the only poor weapon (to be honest, I never tried too hard with them because you got them so late). That is, IMO, more satisfying than having to pick the aggressive route because, with an aggressive build, you've got no other choice.) (In that sense, I'm reluctant to say the skill system is all that great I built a staircase into Castle Clinton last time I played the game, because I saw the possibility, even if there's not a word about it in the game. In this, DXIW, and pretty much every other game, has the designer breathing down your neck, whereas DX just leaves you with a set of rules and asks for your creativity to solve (or make!) problems. DXIW asks you to do A or B, DX asks you to A, but at the same time you can also do B and C if you're creative enough to get out of the box. Basically, I dislike being put in front of linear choices. I've got a little write-up in the Deus Ex thread, here (), which deals with why I like DX far better than DXIW. I never used rocket launchers, because the spy drone didn't cost a ton of ammo, and as such, I always knew beforehand how I'd deal with heavily armoured enemies spy drones. With DXIW's system, the value attached to a weapon makes a lot of them useless. Same with weapons, I might not be a rifle master, but I can snipe someone when it's really opportune or I can fire a GEP gun even though I have no training in it. Here's the thing DX has you specialise, but a lot of other options are still usable yeah, I might not be the lockpick master, but I can open this doors if I'm willing to spend a lot of lockpicks. Personally, I liked those decisions, and found myself relying on the incendiary crossbow all the time in DXIW. If managing supplies isn't your thing, I don't really see how you can love DX. You're constantly asking yourself whether you should spend health, grenades, rockets, special ammo, multitools, lockpicks, rebreathers, bio-electric energy, BE-cells, medkits and candy bars. So why, then, in an action RPG like Deus Ex with heavy stealth elements would you be forcing the diversification of weaponry with limited ammunition supplies?Deus Ex is a resource management game like few others are. So why, then, in an action RPG like Deus Ex with heavy stealth elements would you be forcing the diversification of weaponry with limited ammunition supplies? It works much better in IW with universal ammunition and a strong focus on role #2: you use the different weapons for their differing capabilities as suits your play style, and conserve ammunition by using stealth to either bypass fights entirely or to gain the upper hand in a fight so you can down enemies quickly with precision fire rather than firing at a moving target. It doesn't really restrict how much you can shoot overall, as several guns are good in a standup fight and you usually get enough ammo to thrive unless you're the worst shot in the world. In a traditional shooter, like Half-Life let's say, ammunition serves in role #1: forcing you to diversify your weapons used. Or 2) Restrict how much the player can shoot. Ammunition in a game serves one of two primary purposes: 1) Force you to use several different weapons rather than just your favorite. After doing some thinking about it (when people thought ME2 would be using universal ammunition, actually) I actually realized that universal ammunition was better for the franchise than the traditional system the original used. 8)Īnd as for the universal ammunition, it never bothered me. IW def sucked, Loved the first and i hope this new one will be good.I just love it when someone rises to a challenge.
